Light of Fireflies 2013
The 2013 firefly season brought many early dusk fireflies to the more shady streets in my neighborhood, near Kimball and Armitage in Chicago. Over the 4th of July holiday, I spent a couple nights catching and printing in my bathroom darkroom.
This year I caught mainly males and there was one in particular on the first night that really liked to show off his bright light signal. For contrast and depth, I gathered a bunch of different plant leaves from a friend's yard and did my best to get the fireflies to interact with the foliage. The smaller, more jagged leaf edges appear in some of the prints. The second night the fireflies seemed to be more anxious, sputtering out light in little flashes and running across the paper.
