Fabricating Iconic

October - December 2015

Collaboration and discovery is at the core of the culture at CallisonRTKL. For the 2015 Open House Chicago, sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, we decided to create an interactive installation that facilitated a visual dialogue to FABRICATE the word ICONIC

Many of people who seek architectural services want to build something that is iconic. Interpreting this is not an easy task. The word iconic has different meanings to different people. Chicago has endless examples of buildings that define the word, so we asked the visitors to the space during the Open House help us visualize it by first choosing a local building, then a descriptor word and catagory.

Decscriptors:
FAMOUS, TIMELESS, UNIQUE, ORNATE, POWERFUL, INNOVATIVE, REVOLUTIONARY, CLASSIC, INSPIRING, PROVOCATIVE, MONUMENTAL, SCULPTURAL, MINIMAL, HARMONIOUS & EFFICIENT

We also created a digital survey to share in our offices around the globe to compare the differences between the 'General Public' vs 'Architects' ideas of what defines iconic. The finds were very interesting and should be published by the firm in 2016.
